How far do you hit your Driver and 5 Iron?

The discussion about how far the golf ball travels has been strong for quite some time now. The golf ball, and equipment advancements have made the game more enjoyable for many, but has it influenced what tee boxes you play? For some the thought of playing anything other than the back tee boxesis out of the question, and for others they only feel comfortable playing the most forward tees on the golf course. So what is the right tee box to play?

Golf Canada came out with suggestions based on the golfers driving distance, and the suggested length of tee box to play:
275 yards 6,700 - 6,900 yards
250 yards 6,200 - 6,400 yards
225 yards 5,800 - 6,000 yards
200 yards 5,200 - 5,400 yards
175 yards 4,400 - 4,600 yards
150 yards 3,500 - 3,700 yards
125 yards 2,800 - 3,000 yards
100 yards 2,100 - 2,300 yards

These distances are recommended so the golfer has more 6 and 7 irons for their approach shots, rather than hybrids and woods. This is how the Professionals play the game, so why not experience the same sort of golf as you watch on TV?

Golf Digest wrote an article last year off of a post Athletic Motion Golf put out, and they are suggesting that you take your 5 iron distance, and multiply it by 36:
200 yard 5 iron - 7200 yards
190 yard 5 iron - 6840 yards
180 yard 5 iron - 6480 yards
170 yard 5 iron - 6120 yards
160 yard 5 iron - 5760 yards
150 yard 5 iron - 5400 yards
140 yard 5 iron - 5040 yards
130 yard 5 iron - 4680 yards

To compare these yardages to the tee boxes at our two championship size golf courses that would mean at Riverway, the suggested Driver and 5 iron distance from each set of tee’s would be:

Blacks - 275+ yard driver, 200 yard 5 iron
Blues - 250 yard driver, 180 yard 5 iron
Whites - 225 yard driver, 170 yard 5 iron
Reds - 200 yard driver, 150 yard 5 iron

And Burnaby Mountain:
Blues - 250 yard driver, 180 yard 5 iron
Whites - 225 yard driver, 170 yard 5 iron
Silvers - 200 yard driver, 160 yard 5 iron
Reds - 185 yard driver, 140 yard 5 iron

If you are not sure how far you hit your 5 iron we have a solution. At each Driving Range in Burnaby we have personal launch monitors that you can use to calculate your distances. By using this technology you will learn which tee boxes these 2 articles suggest you should play.
