Burnaby Golf’s operations statement is “Support us today as we improve golf for tomorrow". It's based on a desire to continuously make our golf courses better. Our goal is to ensure that your playing experience is always a good one. In order to accomplish our goal we have initiated a Golf Course Improvement Plan. Over the years we have paved cart paths, installed over 150 km of drainage, and redesigned and developed our sand bunkers, among many other improvements.
A year ago we initiated a three year plan to renovate existing tee decks and install new ones. Based on original course design and construction, some of our tee decks were lacking surface area and appropriate distance for our current usage. In an effort to address these issues, as well as fix some significant wear and tear on certain tee decks, Burnaby Mountain and Riverway golf courses have started the process of installing and renovating our tee decks to enhance the golfing experience at our facilities.
The latest improvement has occurred at #11 Tee at Riverway Golf Course where a new tee surface has been constructed with a complete drainage plan and cart path installation.
The original smaller designed Tee Decks in Burnaby did not foresee golf becoming the #1 participation sport in Canada. With the amount of play our facilities receive annually, our tee decks will need to be larger to accommodate the wear and tear they receive. Certain holes will require more tee deck surface area. Also, golf equipment has advanced since our courses were initially constructed, with players carrying their tee shots more than 300 yards at times. This has created landing zones that were not designed to take this type of stress; making the original design even more challenging. Changing the position of certain tee decks is the solution to this problem and will make the golf course more playable throughout the year.
This golf course improvement initiative also gives us the opportunity to make our tee decks maintenance efficient. In an effort to become even more environmentally aware of how we influence our Green Space with the new design, we will be able to reduce the amount of water our Tee Decks receive by 25%.
