Cold weather golfing tips

Last updated: November 22, 2024

With the weather getting colder and wetter, it’s important adapt your game to the elements. Here are 5 tips on how to maximize your performance as the cold starts to settle in.

Dress appropriately

Dressing warmly for cold weather but light enough for proper body movement can be tricky during the winter months. Instead of tight clothing consider dressing in loose layers which can be taken off as you continue your game. Not sure what to wear? Both Burnaby Mountain and Riverway pro shops are stocked with all the best gear so visit us for a cold weather refresh.

Use the Golf Burnaby app

The rainier it is, the harder it is to keep your scorecard dry and intact. Download the Golf Burnaby app and use the online scorecard as an alternative.

Use a soft golf ball

Compression is harder to generate as the weather gets colder. Using a soft golf ball can give you a better feel for the ball. The Callaway Supersoft and the Titleist Tour soft are great for cold weather and both are available at our pro shops.

Adjust your club selection

Consider adjusting your club selection in colder weather, as your clubs and balls won’t perform the same as they do in warmer months. Colder, denser air creates more friction, so you’ll need to use longer clubs to compensate.

Allow for less run

When the ground is wet, the ball won’t roll as far. Adjust your play accordingly: use more club on holes where you’d usually hold back, hit chip-and-runs harder, opt for more lofted shots, and putt more firmly.

Just because the weather gets colder doesn’t mean that golf play has to stop. Our tips are just a few suggestions for cold weather golfing, but feel free to talk to any of our pros for other tips and tricks. Happy golfing!
