Why are you passionate about golf?

The relationships, experiences and opportunities golf has gifted me over the years have been incredible. From dinner with Payne Stewart to placing a golf club in the hands of a brand-new golfer, wonder is always right around the corner with golf. One of the most amazing things about the game is its ability to teach and equip one to respond to life’s ups and downs. There’s a quote by Bobby Jones that sums it up perfectly, “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life.  You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play the ball from where it lies.”

I grew up playing a plethora of team and individual sports, but none gained my lifelong attention and devotion quite like golf (ok, hockey is up there, too). There’s nothing like being out on the golf course, playing with and against yourself on a journey of highs and lows, striving to be the best version of yourself. Every person can benefit from golf by learning how to strengthen resiliency, work ethic and character. This world would look much different if everyone played golf!

Why do you love teaching golf?

In my 25 years as a member of the Canadian PGA and teaching professionally at Riverway Golf Course, I have had the privilege of coaching thousands of golfers. Being able to participate in a student's learning process, fueling their knowledge, depth and enjoyment of the game has been priceless. I love getting to assist a student in meeting their goals, celebrating their growth, as well as supporting them through their disappointments and plateaus. Watching students work through the initial learning phase of golf, to proficiently getting out and experiencing for themselves the tremendous sense of achievement this game brings gives me a high level of personal and professional satisfaction.

Are there any aspects of golf that are your specialty?

In addition to sound and proven fundamentals, I believe in exploring the human aspects of the game that could be responsible for bad shots and botched rounds. I coach my students to explore more of a growth mindset, creating measurable and attainable goals to put them in the driver's seat of their personal growth. “Trust the process and the outcomes will follow” is one of my primary philosophies, gaining proficiency in one area will take pressure off other aspects of the game but it cannot all be learned at once! I have been told I have a special way of helping my students embrace, comprehend, feel, and repeat change, leading to more fruitful practice sessions and better scores.

What do you enjoy doing outside of golf?

I have been married to the best guy for 25 years, which has led to my life’s greatest treasures; Shaye, Caleb and Jonas. When not at Riverway, I’m out exploring new countries, food, cultures (and their golf courses). I am also a “fur-mom” to 2 of the most adorable Bernedoodles, so you can often find me out hiking a mountain or lounging lake-side to ensure they are living their best dog lives!
